Nervous Energy and Looking Inside
Flash backwards, 20 years ago. I was working as a waiter in a restaurant, and as I sat there at the computer after just having entered a tables order into the computer, I was standing there fiddling with my pen, and a waitress looked over at me and said, “Ben why is it that you always seem to be moving?”
I looked at her and I said I have a lot of energy. She then said to me, “yes it seems like nervous energy”.
I casually shrugged it off, however I can tell you that I thought about that moment many times over the past 20 years.
Flash forward 10 years later, I was learning how to meditate, and in meditation I found myself exploring my mind, and learning a lot of new things about myself and human nature. I always thought of until that point that I was very in tune with my “insides”, my spirit.
As it turns out I was not.
I learned a process for looking inside myself. For combing my mind. For examining and observing my subconscious.
I recall one day asking my mother, “have you ever meditated?” She responded “no I don’t want to see what’s inside there”. LOL.
The interesting thing there is that many people do not want to look inside. As if they will find some horrible things, some nasty things, or something that they feel that they will be unable to deal with. Yes, you that find some scary things, some things that make you go, “wow, I did not know that that was in there”.
The truth is that anything that you could ever find inside your subconscious mind, you have the ability to deal with.
Let me repeat that anything that you find inside yourself you have the ability to deal with.
Going within only seems to be a scary thing, because of the fact that we believe that we will find things in there that we are unable to handle, unable to deal with. When the truth is that we are absolutely able to deal with that.
For people who struggle with anxiety and panic attacks, and all the craziness that goes along with it we must look inside. We don’t really have the option, the luxury to not look inside. If by chance you are coming from the place that you are simply looking for someone else to remove your anxiety for you, I’m sorry to say that that is not the case. No one can remove your anxiety for you, but I think you already know that.
In the end it will all boils down to you. Are you willing to take action? Are you willing to do whatever you can to get done with your anxiety, to move beyond your anxiety, to get bigger than your anxiety?
The answer has to be yes, for you to move beyond your current standpoint. To move beyond anxiety. To free yourself from the shackles, and bondage of anxiety attacks.
You simply must take action. Look inside for your answers. The truth about your anxiety and panic lies just beneath the anxiety and panic. It’s quite ironic actually.
That waitress that observed my nervous energy was right on the money. She was right, I did have a lot of nervous energy. And it wasn’t until many years later I realized the truth of her words in that moment.
I had always had a great deal of nervous energy. I used it in many different productive ways in my life such as excelling in sports. I did not realize the extent of the nervous energy until I began meditation, and realized how difficult it was to simply sit still and observe everything that was going on inside my mind.
I have not meditated for years, because I felt that it was no longer helping me. It’s important that every now and then we take a look at our lives and realize that there are certain things that were doing better no longer helping, or serving us. And it’s important that we stop doing those things when we realize that they’re no longer serving us.
I want to leave you with a few questions to contemplate.
Is there anything that you’re doing in your life right now that used to serve you but no longer does?
Do you have any excessive nervous energy in your life?
What are you doing about that nervous energy?
Do you feel that this nervous energy is helping you?
