(These are not all of them and I am sure you could even add a few to the list yourself couldn’t you?)
There is an extensive list of symptoms of anxiety. But what is most interesting to note is that each and everyone of these is actually just a symptom of very high stress and or chronic stress.
Now when I say high stress I don’t mean feeling a little bit stressed out, I mean there is a large stress response in the body and mind. So what is a stress response?
A stress response is your body’s reaction to a fight or flight situation. Now that the fight or flight situation maybe something that is happening outside of you or inside of you.
However it is extremely important to note that even though there is something happening outside of you, what is truly happening is there is a reaction to what you are perceiving.
Your body, just like my body, and everybody’s body is wired for the fight or flight response. We’ve had this ever since the caveman days. Ideally it was to help us from getting killed by a sabertooth tiger, or some other sort of thing that was an outside threat. Essentially this is a hardwired mechanism within us to keep us alive, it is a survival mechanism.
Now you may very well be saying okay great that’s fine, but there are no sabertooth tigers or any major outside threats in my life.
If that is correct there are for the most part, no major threats, in the Western world.
So then, where does all of this extreme reaction, and fighter flight triggering come from?
Well without mincing words, it’s important to know that all of this comes from the inside.
Specifically inside of you.
No this does not mean that you were broken, need fixing, or are going crazy, or are messed up.
The best way to look at this is that it is a rough patch, and there are simply some things inside of you that need to be sorted out.
Some people in the medical field, may classify what you are experiencing as a form of mental illness, but I could not disagree more. I would classify this as a mental difficulty, but to be more clear it is just a rough patch, and as a result there are some things inside of you that need to be sorted out.
The way out of anxiety, is as simple as sorting these things out inside your mind. So that you can feel better about yourself, about the future, about who you are, what you are, where you are going, and what you are doing.
Now that paragraph may sound like an oversimplification, but I can assure you that as someone who has had intense struggles with panic attacks, agoraphobia, chronic anxiety, and extremely irrational fears, for an extended period in his life that this is exactly the way out of anxiety and everything else that goes along with it.
Currently in your life if you were experiencing any or a lot of the symptoms above, then you likely feel that this is a massive deal in your life, because it is consuming so much of your mind and your life energy. So for me to say that you are simply going through a rough patch and there is just some sorting that needs to happen for you to and your anxiety, may not sound very helpful in this moment.
But I am here to tell you that, That is exactly what is happening. If you choose to believe that you are struggling with or suffering from a form of mental illness then as a result you will feel that your treatment and your curing of your mental illness become something of a very large project and something that becomes very difficult for you.
As opposed to if you choose to believe, that this is simply a rough patch then in your mind it becomes something that is easier to fix.
And that is really and truly the best place to come from. Because when you come from that standpoint you realize that this is not a massive an impossible goal but instead is just something that requires your attention, and awareness, and daily effort to work through.
A higher truth in all of this, is that you are a beautiful impressive, amazing, fantastic, capable, powerful person. Although you likely do not feel any of those things in this very moment, and you have to know that that is okay. And as the fog of anxiety leaves your life you will begin to feel those things and feel that way again, or for the first time in your life which of course is just a beautiful thing.
Now, although with the statistics of people who suffer from anxiety issues is something close to 25% of the American population, it does not mean that the problem is unsolvable, it simply means that there are many people that struggle with it.
You have likely read or heard that everyone experiences at least some anxiety in their lifetime and that is true for about 99% of the population. The difference is does it grow into something that becomes unmanageable for you, or into something that has higher levels to it such as panic attacks, or agoraphobia. Or does it turn into something that is just the occasional bouts of anxiety that you experience when you are under additional stress, more than you are used to.
